Which person from your past, who you've lost touch with, do you wonder about the most?
Submitted by ancora impara.
His name rhymes with "Luck," and that's all I'll say.
When you go out to eat, how do you pick where to go?
Submitted by Kristine.
This is a tough one. My partner in crime has dining moods. They are typified by the "light sauce" and "heavy sauce" moods. Light might be "moo goo gai pan" and "heavy" might be marinara sauce. So all decisions start with a binary divergence based on the saucy mood.
Then location is the next consideration. "What's close to home?" I eat out too much, it seems. So the decision is never made ahead of time, but instead, is considered by price and convenience. We have a few regular choices to throw into the mix... a Mexican place, an Italian favorite, and a Vietnamese place...
Great synergy and happiness takes place when the sauce mood, cuisine type, and restaurant choice between us both hit the money, and we want the same thing. Life is then really good.
Who taught you how to cook?
Submitted by Donna.
There is no one person that taught me how to cook. I learned from so many people. My mother, perhaps. Food Network, definitely. The Frugal Gourmet. Julia Child. The only person who has ever stood next to me, and taught me something about cooking, I no longer have contact with.
He taught me I didn't need a peeler to peel a carrot. I could use a sharp knife, held at a 90-degree angle. Removes the dirty, outer layer, just fine. I now do this exclusively.
I enjoy teaching others how to cook--and if not "cook," cook well. Sometimes I'm messy, though.
Who taught you how to ride a bike?
My parents did. I am not sure if it was more mom, or more dad. I had training wheels. I was proud of the day I wanted them taken off. My parents said "No, you need to keep them on longer," but I fought them. I figured out how to ride a bike. What pleasure!
If you could open a restaurant, any kind you want, what would it look like and what's on the menu?
Submitted by A is for Amy.
I have many ideas for many restaurants. But mine--for this QOTD--would be a Chinese place. Upscale, of course.
Picture a large, nearly square, but rectangular, 2-story building. The roof angles down towards the entrance, on the corner, and wedged there on the top of the roof is this giant wok. It's flaming, much like an olympic torch. Most of the walls (let's say 2/3 around the entrance) are glass, and directly behind them, are cascading water falls. Light comes in, but is diffused. The sound makes for a tranquil environment inside.
For the lack of time I have, and better modifiers, the interior is taken from a page from P.F. Chang's. Artifacts, perhaps some more modern NYC-style touches, and of course, those water falls. Dramatic lighting. A large bar in the back, set on a half-circle. Beyond--the kitchen and offices.
The cuisine would include some authenticity, but also fusion touches for the modern diner. I haven't considered a full menu, but szchezuan (my spelling of this word, I know, needs help) would be a focus, with lots of spice. Minimalist plates. Portions are reasonable to small, but no clear distinction on appetizer, entrée, etc. I would simply invite folks to share and order a variety of these "small plates."
That's my idea, for now, of a restaurant.
I tried a sketch in Google Sketch-Up, but my skills yet are still primitive in this 3D program.
What are the things in life that you're truly passionate about?
Submitted by Jess.
Computers, Macintosh, music, good food, diet Coke.
I'm also passionate about procrastination, some times. Currently, I'm finding it difficult to focus on things, such as Christmas shopping and the like. I have a few good books in queue to read, but the computer sucks up my time too often. Currently am in the midst of a major ripping campaign on the computer, and trying to jump-start my online publishing empire with 2 (new) blogs.
Want to satisfy my creative urges with an Internet-channeled cooking show but need some better equipment. Need to learn more about lighting and a good camera. Passions: creative technology.
What's your favorite Thanksgiving dish?
Submitted by Brennan.
Pickles and olives. I know that doesn't sound right, but my mom would always put out these things as part of a crudité before the official dinner started. I'd put the black olives over my fingers and eat them off.
What did you think you would never ever do... but did?
Submitted by Murky.
This is a difficult question to answer. There are all types of things that have happened to me, that I could never imagine. Yet, the question is focused: what did I think I would never do...
I never think I could lose control. I pride myself on control. I might even be obsessed by having control of siutations I find myself in. And so it was: the other day I was suffering from hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), and I was driving. This lady I encountered in the parking lot was driving a large S.U.V. She was ready to turn out, and I, to turn in. She had the obligation to stop, with a sign, I did not. But I could not proceed driving because she and her car were in the way.
